XLVIII.
There
is
a
death
in
the
house,
It
happened
today.
I
know
by
the
look
The
house
has
now.
Neighbors
go
in
and
out,
The
doctor
drives
away.
A
window
opens,
Quickly,
like
a
pod;
Someone
throws
a
mattress
out,
—
Children
hurry
by;
They
wonder
if
it
died
there,
—
I
did
too
as
a
boy.
The
minister
goes
in
As
if
the
house
is
his,
And
he
owns
all
the
people
now,
And
little
boys
too;
And
then
the
milliner,
and
the
man
Of
the
sad
trade,
To
measure
the
house.
There
will
be
a
dark
parade
Of
tassels
and
coaches
soon;
It's
easy
to
see,
—
The
news
spreads
fast
In
a
country
town.
