XV.
THE
LONELY
HOUSE.
I
know
some
lonely
houses
by
the
road
A
thief
would
like
to
see,
—
Wooden
barred,
And
windows
low,
Inviting
to
A
porch,
Where
two
could
sneak:
One
holds
the
tools,
The
other
checks
That
all
are
asleep.
Old
eyes,
Not
easy
to
surprise!
How
neat
the
kitchen
looks
at
night,
With
just
a
clock,
—
But
they
could
stop
the
tick,
And
mice
don't
bark;
So
the
walls
stay
quiet,
And
no
one
will
tell.
A
pair
of
glasses
just
move
—
An
almanac
knows.
Did
the
mat
wink,
Or
a
star
shake?
The
moon
slides
down
the
stairs
To
see
who's
there.
There's
treasure,
—
where?
Cup,
or
spoon,
Earring,
or
stone,
A
watch,
an
old
brooch
To
match
grandma,
Sleeping
there.
Day
comes,
too,
Stealth
is
slow;
The
sun
reaches
The
third
tree.
The
rooster
screams,
Who's
there?
And
echoes,
go
away,
Sneer
—
"Where?"
While
the
old
couple,
just
awake,
Think
the
sunrise
left
the
door
open!
