XXX.
THE
HEMLOCK.
I
think
the
hemlock
likes
to
stand
On
the
edge
of
snow;
It
matches
his
own
strict
style,
And
fills
an
awe
That
people
must
find
in
wild
places,
Or
in
the
desert
fill,
—
A
need
for
the
old,
the
bare,
A
northern
necessity.
The
hemlock's
nature
loves
the
cold;
The
bite
of
northern
winds
Is
sweetest
food
to
him,
His
best
drinks.
To
soft
people
he
is
nothing;
But
children
on
the
river
Under
his
branches
play,
And
wrestlers
run.
