BY
THE
SEA.
I
started
early,
took
my
dog,
And
went
to
the
sea;
The
mermaids
in
the
basement
Came
out
to
see
me,
And
ships
in
the
upper
floor
Reached
out
hempen
hands,
Thinking
I
was
a
mouse
On
the
sands.
But
no
one
moved
me
till
the
tide
Went
past
my
simple
shoe,
And
past
my
apron
and
my
belt,
And
past
my
dress
too,
And
acted
like
it
would
eat
me
up
As
fully
as
dew
On
a
dandelion's
sleeve
—
And
then
I
moved
too.
And
he
—
he
followed
close;
I
felt
his
silver
heel
On
my
ankle,
—
then
my
shoes
Filled
with
pearl.
Until
we
reached
the
solid
town,
No
one
seemed
to
know
him;
And
bowing
with
a
great
look
At
me,
the
sea
withdrew.
