XV.
THE
LONELY
HOUSE.
I
know
some
lonely
houses
off
the
road
A
robber
would
like,
With
wooden
bars,
And
low
windows,
Inviting
to
A
porch,
Where
two
could
sneak:
One
with
tools,
The
other
peeks
To
check
if
all's
asleep.
Old-fashioned
eyes,
Hard
to
surprise!
How
neat
the
kitchen
looks
at
night,
With
just
a
clock,
—
But
they
could
stop
the
tick,
And
mice
won't
bark;
And
so
the
walls
don't
tell,
None
will.
A
pair
of
spectacles
slightly
open
just
stir
—
An
almanac
knows.
Was
it
the
mat
that
winked,
Or
a
nervous
star?
The
moon
slides
down
the
stairs
To
see
who's
there.
There's
treasure,
—
where?
Tankard,
or
spoon,
Earring,
or
stone,
A
watch,
some
old
brooch
To
match
grandma,
Sleeping
there.
Day
rattles,
too,
Stealth
is
slow;
The
sun
reaches
The
third
sycamore.
Rooster
screams,
Who's
there?
And
echoes,
fade
away,
Sneer
—
"Where?"
While
the
old
couple,
just
awake,
Think
the
sunrise
left
the
door
open!
