XXIII.
THE
BALLOON.
You've
seen
balloons
set,
haven't
you?
So
grand
they
rise
As
if
swans
left
you
For
diamond
duties.
Their
soft
feet
go
gently
out
On
a
sea
of
blond;
They
reject
the
air
as
too
low
For
creatures
so
famous.
Their
ribbons
just
beyond
sight,
They
struggle
for
breath,
And
yet
the
crowd
cheers
below;
They
would
not
cheer
death.
The
golden
creature
strains
and
spins,
Trips
wildly
in
a
tree,
Tears
open
her
grand
veins
And
falls
in
the
sea.
The
crowd
leaves
with
a
curse
The
dust
in
streets
settles,
And
clerks
in
offices
say,
'It
was
only
a
balloon.
