IV.
THE
WAKING
YEAR.
A
lady
red
on
the
hill
Keeps
her
yearly
secret;
A
lady
white
in
the
field
In
calm
lily
sleeps!
The
breezes
with
their
brooms
Sweep
valley,
hill,
and
tree!
Tell
me,
my
pretty
housewives!
Who
is
expected
to
come?
The
neighbors
do
not
yet
know!
The
woods
share
a
smile
—
Orchard,
buttercup,
and
bird
—
In
just
a
little
while!
And
yet
how
still
the
landscape
stands,
How
calm
the
wood,
As
if
a
resurrection
Were
nothing
strange!
