XLVIII.
There
was
a
death
in
the
house
Across
the
street
today.
I
know
it
by
the
numb
look
These
houses
always
have.
The
neighbors
come
and
go,
The
doctor
drives
away.
A
window
opens
wide,
Abruptly,
like
a
machine;
Someone
throws
a
mattress
out,
—
The
children
hurry
past;
They
wonder
if
someone
died
there,
—
I
did
when
I
was
young.
The
minister
walks
in
stiffly
As
if
the
house
were
his,
And
he
owns
all
the
mourners
now,
And
little
boys
too;
Then
comes
the
milliner,
and
the
man
With
the
sad
job,
To
measure
the
house.
There'll
be
a
dark
parade
Of
tassels
and
coaches
soon;
It's
as
clear
as
a
sign,
—
The
news
travels
fast
In
a
small
country
town.
