LVIII.
RETROSPECT.
It
was
just
this
time
last
year
I
died.
I
remember
hearing
the
corn,
When
I
was
carried
by
the
farms,
—
It
had
tassels
on.
I
thought
how
yellow
it
would
look
When
Richard
went
to
mill;
And
then
I
wanted
to
get
out,
But
something
held
me
back.
I
thought
just
how
red
apples
were
Between
the
stubble's
joints;
And
carts
went
around
the
fields
To
gather
the
pumpkins
in.
I
wondered
who
would
miss
me
least,
And
when
Thanksgiving
came,
If
father
would
add
more
plates
To
make
an
even
number.
And
if
my
stocking
hung
too
high,
Would
it
spoil
the
Christmas
fun,
That
no
Santa
Claus
could
reach
As
high
as
me?
But
this
thought
made
me
sad,
and
so
I
thought
how
it
would
be
When
just
this
time,
some
perfect
year,
They
would
come
to
me.
