RENUNCIATION.
There
came
a
day
at
summer's
peak
Entirely
for
me;
I
thought
such
days
were
for
the
saints,
Where
revelations
be.
The
sun,
as
usual,
shone
bright,
The
flowers,
as
always,
grew,
As
if
no
soul
the
solstice
passed
That
makes
all
things
new.
The
time
was
hardly
touched
by
words;
The
symbol
of
a
word
Was
needless,
as
at
sacrament
The
wardrobe
of
our
Lord.
Each
was
to
each
the
sealed
church,
Allowed
to
share
this
time,
Lest
we
too
awkward
show
At
supper
of
the
Lamb.
The
hours
passed
fast,
as
hours
do,
Held
tight
by
eager
hands;
So
faces
on
two
decks
look
back,
Bound
to
different
lands.
And
so,
when
all
the
time
was
gone,
Without
a
sound,
Each
held
the
other's
cross,
We
gave
no
other
bond.
Enough
promise
that
we
shall
rise
—
Freed,
at
last,
from
the
grave
—
To
that
new
marriage,
justified
Through
Calvaries
of
Love!
