XXXVII.
A
THUNDER-STORM.
The
wind
started
to
shake
the
grass
With
low,
threatening
sounds;
It
threw
a
threat
at
the
earth,
And
one
at
the
sky.
The
leaves
left
the
trees
And
flew
around;
The
dust
rose
up
like
hands
And
covered
the
road.
Wagons
moved
faster
on
the
streets,
Thunder
moved
slowly;
Lightning
showed
a
yellow
beak,
Then
a
pale
claw.
Birds
closed
their
nests,
Cattle
ran
to
barns;
One
big
drop
of
rain
fell,
And
then,
as
if
hands
That
held
back
water
let
go,
The
sky
was
filled
with
rain,
But
it
missed
my
father's
house,
Only
hitting
a
tree.
