XXIX.
GHOSTS.
One
need
not
be
a
room
to
be
haunted,
One
need
not
be
a
house;
The
brain
has
corridors
greater
Than
any
place.
Far
safer,
at
midnight
meeting
An
outside
ghost,
Than
facing
inside
That
whiter
host.
Far
safer
through
an
Abbey
run,
The
stones
chasing,
Than,
moonless,
meet
oneself
In
a
lonely
place.
Ourself,
behind
ourself
hidden,
Should
frighten
most;
An
attacker,
hid
in
our
room,
Be
horror's
least.
The
careful
carries
a
weapon,
He
locks
the
door,
Missing
a
closer
ghost
More
near.
