IV.
THE
CONTRACT.
I
gave
myself
to
him,
And
took
him
as
my
pay.
The
solemn
contract
of
a
life
Was
sealed
in
this
way.
The
wealth
might
disappoint,
I
might
prove
poorer
than
he
guessed,
But
Love's
daily
presence
Is
the
true
test.
The
vision
might
fade
away;
Yet,
until
the
merchant
buys,
The
fabled
isles
of
spice
Hold
their
subtle
prize.
At
least,
it's
mutual
risk,
—
Some
found
it
mutual
gain;
Sweet
debt
of
life,
—
each
night
to
owe,
And
be
broke
every
day.
