XXV.
THE
MUSHROOM.
The
mushroom
is
a
plant's
elf,
Not
there
at
night,
you
see;
By
morning,
in
a
small
hut,
It
stands
so
suddenly.
As
if
it
had
been
waiting;
Yet
its
whole
life
is
brief,
Shorter
than
a
snake's
pause,
Quicker
than
a
thief.
It's
nature's
clever
trickster,
The
germ
of
mystery;
It
appears
like
a
bubble,
And
vanishes
swiftly.
I
feel
as
if
the
grass
likes
Its
sudden
disappear;
The
sneaky
child
of
summer's
Careful
atmosphere.
If
nature
had
an
outcast,
Could
she
a
child
disown?
If
she
had
a
betrayer,
That
mushroom
would
be
known.
