XXVI.
The
farthest
thunder
that
I
heard
Was
closer
than
the
sky,
And
rumbles
still,
though
hot
noons
Have
laid
their
missiles
by.
The
lightning
that
came
before
it
Struck
no
one
but
myself,
But
I
would
not
trade
the
bolt
For
all
the
rest
of
life.
Debts
to
oxygen
The
chemist
may
repay,
But
not
the
debt
To
electricity.
It
builds
the
homes
and
lights
the
days,
And
every
bright
noise
Is
just
the
gleam
that
comes
with
That
surprising
light.
The
thought
is
quiet
as
a
flake,
—
A
crash
without
a
sound;
How
life's
echo
Found
its
explanation!
