XIV.
A
WELL.
What
mystery
envelops
a
well!
The
water
dwells
so
far,
Like
a
neighbor
from
another
world
Living
in
a
jar.
The
grass
does
not
appear
afraid;
I
often
wonder
how
It
can
stand
so
close
and
look
so
bold
At
what
is
fearsome
to
me.
Related
somehow
they
may
be,
—
The
sedge
stands
by
the
sea,
Where
it
is
floorless,
yet
of
fear
It
shows
no
evidence.
But
nature
remains
a
stranger;
Those
who
cite
her
most
Have
never
passed
her
haunted
house,
Nor
simplified
her
ghost.
To
pity
those
that
know
her
not
Is
aided
by
the
regret
That
those
who
know
her,
know
her
less
The
nearer
they
approach.
