XXIX.
TRYING
TO
FORGET.
Bereft
of
all,
I
ventured
abroad,
No
less
bereft
to
be
Upon
a
new
peninsula,
—
The
grave
preceded
me,
Secured
my
lodgings
before
myself,
And
when
I
sought
my
bed,
The
grave
it
was,
reposed
upon
The
pillow
for
my
head.
I
awoke,
to
find
it
first
awake,
I
rose,
—
it
followed
me;
I
tried
to
lose
it
in
the
crowd,
To
misplace
it
in
the
sea,
In
cups
of
artificial
slumber
To
erase
its
shape
away,
—
The
grave
was
complete,
but
the
spade
Remained
in
memory.
