XLVIII.
There's
been
a
death
in
the
house
across
As
recent
as
today.
I
know
it
by
the
numb
expression
Such
houses
always
display.
The
neighbors
bustle
in
and
out,
The
doctor
drives
away.
A
window
opens
like
a
pod,
Abruptly,
mechanically;
Someone
throws
a
mattress
out,
—
The
children
hurry
past;
They
wonder
if
It
died
on
that,
—
I
used
to
wonder
when
I
was
young.
The
minister
enters
stiffly
As
if
he
owned
the
house,
And
all
the
mourners
too,
And
even
the
little
boys;
And
then
the
milliner,
and
the
man
Of
the
somber
trade,
To
measure
the
house
for
its
needs.
There
will
be
that
dark
procession
Of
tassels
and
of
coaches
soon;
It's
as
clear
as
a
sign,
—
The
intuition
of
the
news
In
just
a
small
town.
