LIII.
RETURNING.
For
years
I
had
been
away
from
home,
And
now,
before
the
door,
I
dared
not
open
it,
lest
a
face
I
never
saw
before
Stare
blankly
into
mine
And
question
my
purpose
there.
My
purpose,
—
just
a
life
I
left,
Was
it
still
dwelling
there?
I
fumbled
at
my
nerve,
I
scanned
the
nearby
windows;
The
silence
like
an
ocean
rolled,
And
broke
against
my
ear.
I
laughed
a
hollow
laugh
That
I
could
fear
a
door,
Having
faced
danger
and
the
dead,
But
never
quaked
before.
I
carefully
fitted
my
hand
To
the
latch,
with
trembling
care,
Lest
the
dreadful
door
should
spring
back,
And
leave
me
standing
there.
I
withdrew
my
fingers
As
cautiously
as
glass,
And
held
my
ears,
and
like
a
thief
Fled
gasping
from
the
house.
