X.
The
only
ghost
I
ever
saw
Was
dressed
in
mechlin,
—
so;
He
wore
no
sandals
on
his
feet,
And
stepped
like
flakes
of
snow.
His
gait
was
soundless,
like
a
bird,
But
swift,
like
a
deer;
His
fashion
quaint,
mosaic,
Or
perhaps,
mistletoe.
His
words
were
few,
His
laughter
like
the
breeze
That
fades
into
dimples
Among
the
thoughtful
trees.
Our
meeting
was
brief,—
Of
me,
he
was
shy;
And
God
forbid
I
look
back
Since
that
appalling
day!
