XXIX.
GHOSTS.
One
need
not
be
a
chamber
to
be
haunted,
One
need
not
be
a
house;
The
mind
has
corridors
surpassing
Material
place.
Far
safer,
at
midnight,
to
meet
An
external
ghost,
Than
to
confront
within
That
whiter
host.
Far
safer
through
an
abbey
gallop,
The
stones
in
chase,
Than,
moonless,
to
encounter
oneself
In
a
lonesome
place.
Ourself,
behind
ourself
concealed,
Should
startle
most;
An
assassin,
hid
in
our
apartment,
Is
horror's
least.
The
prudent
carries
a
revolver,
He
bolts
the
door,
Overlooking
a
superior
specter
More
near.
