Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 16
"Oh,
it
won't
do,"
said
Holmes.
"You
cannot
escape,
Mr.
Windibank.
It
is
too
clear.
You
said
it
was
impossible
for
me
to
solve
this.
Sit
down
and
let
us
talk."
Our
visitor
sat
down,
looking
pale
and
sweaty.
"It—it’s
not
against
the
law,"
he
said.
"I
am
afraid
it
is
not.
But
it
was
cruel
and
selfish.
Now,
let
me
tell
the
story,
and
you
stop
me
if
I
am
wrong."
The
man
sat
with
his
head
down,
looking
crushed.
Holmes
put
his
feet
up
and
began
to
talk,
more
to
himself
than
to
us.
"The
man
married
a
woman
older
than
him
for
her
money,"
he
said.
"He
used
the
daughter's
money
too.
It
was
a
lot
for
them.
Losing
it
would
be
bad.
The
daughter
was
nice
and
kind.
She
was
pretty
and
had
some
money.
She
would
not
stay
single
long.
Her
marriage
meant
losing
money.
So,
her
stepfather
kept
her
home.
He
did
not
let
her
meet
people
her
age.
But
she
wanted
to
go
out.
She
said
she
would
go
to
a
ball.
What
did
her
stepfather
do?
He
had
a
plan.
With
his
wife's
help,
he
dressed
up.
He
wore
glasses,
a
moustache,
and
whiskers.
He
spoke
softly.
The
girl
could
not
see
well.
He
called
himself
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel.
He
kept
other
men
away
by
pretending
to
love
her."
"It
was
a
joke
at
first,"
our
visitor
said.
"We
did
not
think
she
would
like
him
so
much."
"Maybe
not.
But
the
young
lady
liked
him
a
lot.
She
thought
her
stepfather
was
in
France.
She
did
not
suspect
anything.
She
liked
Mr.
Angel's
attention.
Her
mother
also
praised
him.
Mr.
Angel
visited
her.
They
met
often.
They
got
engaged.
This
kept
her
from
other
men.
But
the
lie
could
not
last.
Pretending
to
go
to
France
was
hard.
They
needed
to
end
it
dramatically.
So,
they
made
her
promise
to
be
true.
They
hinted
something
might
happen
on
the
wedding
day.
James
Windibank
wanted
Miss
Sutherland
to
stay
loyal
to
Hosmer
Angel.
He
wanted
her
to
not
look
at
other
men
for
years.
He
took
her
to
the
church.
Then
he
left
by
getting
in
one
door
of
a
car
and
out
the
other.
That
was
the
plan,
Mr.
Windibank!"
Our
visitor
looked
more
confident.
He
stood
up
with
a
cold
look
on
his
face.
