from

Countess's
jewel-case.
The
evidence
was
strong,
so
the
case
went
to
court.

looked

his

and
found
one

John
Horner,

plumber,
was
charged
with
stealing
the
blue
carbuncle
from
the
Countess
of
Morcar's
jewel-case
on

James
Ryder,
a
hotel
worker,
said
he
took
Horner

Countess's
room
to
fix

grate.
Ryder
left
him
alone
for
a
while.
When

Horner
was
gone,
the

Ryder

for

and

evening.
But
the

was

found
on
him

in
his
rooms.
Catherine
Cusack,
the
Countess's
maid,
heard
Ryder's
shout
and
found
the
room
as
described.
Inspector
Bradstreet
arrested
Horner,
who
said
he
was
innocent.
Horner
had
a
past
robbery
conviction,
so
the
magistrate
sent
the
case
to
court.
Horner
was
very
upset
and
fainted
at
the
end."

said
Holmes,
tossing
the
paper
aside.
"Now

must
solve
how

went
from

to

the

with

must

try
