Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 22
We
ran
to
the
fire.
We
saw
a
big
white
house
burning.
Three
fire
engines
tried
to
stop
the
flames.
"That's
it!"
cried
Hatherley.
"There
is
the
drive
and
the
rose
bushes.
I
jumped
from
that
window."
"Well,"
said
Holmes,
"you
got
your
revenge.
Your
lamp
started
the
fire.
They
were
too
busy
chasing
you
to
notice.
Look
for
your
friends
in
the
crowd,
but
they
are
far
away
now."
Holmes
was
right.
We
never
saw
the
woman,
the
German,
or
the
Englishman
again.
A
farmer
saw
a
cart
with
people
and
boxes
going
to
Reading.
But
they
disappeared,
and
even
Holmes
could
not
find
them.
The
firemen
found
strange
things
inside.
They
found
a
thumb
on
a
window.
They
stopped
the
fire
by
sunset.
The
roof
fell
in,
and
the
house
was
ruined.
They
found
metal
but
no
coins.
The
boxes
explained
that.
How
the
engineer
was
moved
was
a
mystery.
But
the
ground
showed
two
people
carried
him.
One
had
small
feet,
the
other
big.
The
Englishman
helped
the
woman
move
him
from
danger.
"Well,"
said
the
engineer
sadly,
"I
lost
my
thumb
and
money.
What
did
I
get?"
"Experience,"
said
Holmes,
laughing.
"It
is
valuable.
Tell
your
story,
and
people
will
like
you."
