doubted
that
idea,”
I
admitted.
“You
did,
but
I
will
prove
it.
Mr.
Jabez
Wilson
came
today
with
a
story.
It
might
be
one
of
the
strangest
I’ve
heard.
Sometimes,
the
smallest
crimes
are
the
most
unusual.
I
don’t
know
if
this
is
a
crime,
but
it
is
very
odd.
Mr.
Wilson,
please
start
your
story
again.
Dr.
Watson
hasn’t
heard
it,
and
I
want
every
detail.
Usually,
I
can
guess
what
happens
next,
but
this
case
is
unique.”
Mr.
Wilson
looked
proud.
He
took
a
dirty
newspaper
from
his
coat.
As
he
read
an
ad,
I
looked
at
him
closely,
trying
to
learn
something
from
his
clothes
or
appearance.
I
didn’t
learn
much.
He
seemed
like
a
normal
British
tradesman,
big
and
slow.
He
wore
baggy
trousers,
a
dirty
coat,
and
a
waistcoat
with
a
chain.
A
hat
and
coat
were
on
a
chair.
Nothing
was
special
about
him
except
his
red
hair
and
unhappy
face.
Holmes
saw
me
looking
and
smiled.
“Besides
the
obvious
facts
that
he
has
done
manual
work,
takes
snuff,
is
a
Freemason,
has
been
to
China,
and
writes
a
lot,
I
see
nothing
else.”
Mr.
Wilson
looked
surprised
and
stared
at
Holmes.
