Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 16
"Oh,
it
won't
work,"
said
Holmes
gently.
"There
is
no
way
out,
Mr.
Windibank.
It
was
very
simple,
and
you
said
I
couldn't
solve
it.
Sit
down,
and
let's
talk."
Our
visitor
fell
into
a
chair,
looking
very
pale
and
sweating.
"It—it’s
not
illegal,"
he
stammered.
"I
am
afraid
it
is
not.
But
it
was
a
very
cruel
and
selfish
trick,
Windibank.
Let
me
go
over
the
events,
and
you
can
correct
me
if
I'm
wrong."
The
man
sat
hunched
in
his
chair,
head
down.
Holmes
put
his
feet
on
the
mantelpiece,
leaned
back,
and
began
to
speak,
more
to
himself
than
to
us.
"The
man
married
a
woman
much
older
than
him
for
her
money,"
he
said.
"He
also
enjoyed
the
money
of
the
daughter
while
she
lived
with
them.
It
was
a
big
amount
for
their
position,
and
losing
it
would
change
things
a
lot.
So,
he
tried
to
keep
it.
The
daughter
was
nice
and
warm-hearted.
With
her
looks
and
her
little
income,
she
would
not
stay
single
long.
Her
marriage
would
mean
losing
a
hundred
a
year.
So,
what
does
her
stepfather
do?
He
keeps
her
at
home
and
stops
her
from
meeting
people
her
age.
But
soon
she
wanted
more
freedom.
She
said
she
would
go
to
a
ball.
What
does
her
clever
stepfather
do
then?
He
has
an
idea.
With
his
wife's
help,
he
disguises
himself.
He
covers
his
eyes
with
glasses,
wears
a
moustache
and
whiskers,
changes
his
voice
to
a
whisper,
and
because
the
girl
cannot
see
well,
he
becomes
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel
and
keeps
other
lovers
away
by
pretending
to
love
her
himself."
"It
was
just
a
joke
at
first,"
our
visitor
groaned.
"We
never
thought
she
would
fall
in
love."
"Maybe
not.
But
the
young
lady
was
very
much
in
love,
and
she
believed
her
stepfather
was
in
France,
so
she
never
thought
of
any
trick.
She
liked
Mr.
Angel's
attention,
and
her
mother
admired
him
too.
Mr.
Angel
began
to
visit
her.
They
met
often,
and
there
was
an
engagement
to
keep
her
from
looking
at
other
men.
But
the
lie
could
not
last
forever.
The
trips
to
France
were
too
complicated.
The
plan
was
to
end
it
in
a
way
that
left
a
strong
memory.
This
way,
she
would
not
look
at
other
men
for
a
long
time.
So,
there
were
promises
on
a
book
and
hints
about
something
happening
on
the
wedding
day.
James
Windibank
wanted
Miss
Sutherland
to
be
tied
to
Hosmer
Angel
and
unsure
about
him,
so
she
would
not
listen
to
another
man
for
ten
years.
He
took
her
to
the
church
door,
and
then
he
disappeared
by
stepping
in
one
side
of
a
cab
and
out
the
other.
I
think
that
was
the
story,
Mr.
Windibank!"
Our
visitor
felt
more
confident
as
Holmes
spoke.
He
stood
up
with
a
cold
smile
on
his
pale
face.
