man's
statement.
I
sat
in
the
carriage
corner
and
read
it
carefully.
It
said:
"Mr.
James
McCarthy,
the
deceased's

evidence:
'I
was
away
for
three
days
in
Bristol
and
returned
last
Monday.
My
father
was
not
home,
and
the
maid
said
he
went
to
Ross
with
John
Cobb,
the
groom.
Soon
after,
I
heard
his
trap
in
the
yard.
I
looked
out
and
saw
him
leave
quickly,
but
I
didn't
know
where
he
was
going.
I
took
my
gun
and
walked
toward
Boscombe
Pool
to
visit
the
rabbit
warren.
On
the
way,
I
saw
William
Crowder,
the
game-keeper,
but
he
is
wrong
to
think
I
followed
my
father.
I
didn't
know
he
was
ahead
of
me.
About
a
hundred
yards
from
the
pool,
I
heard
"Cooee!"—a
signal
between
my
father
and
me.
I
ran
forward
and
found
him
by
the
pool.
He
seemed
surprised
to
see
me
and
asked
roughly
what
I
was
doing
there.
We
argued
and
almost
fought
because
he
had
a
violent
temper.
I
left
when
his
anger
grew
and
headed
back
to
Hatherley
Farm.
After
150
yards,
I
heard
a
terrible
cry
and
ran
back.
I
found
my
father
dying
on
the
ground,
his
head
badly
hurt.
I
dropped
my
gun
and
held
him,
but
he
died
quickly.
I
knelt
by
him
for
a
while,
then
went
to
Mr.
Turner's
lodge-keeper
for
help.
I
saw
no
one
near
my
father
when
I
returned,
and
I
don't
know
how
he
got
hurt.
He
was
not
popular,
but
I
know
of
no
enemies.
That's
all
I
know.'"
"The
Coroner:
Did
your
father
say
anything
to
you
before
he
died?"
"Witness:
He
mumbled
some
words,
but
I
only
heard
something
about
a
rat."
