Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
Capítulo 7, Página 8
"A
thousand
pounds!
Great
Lord
of
mercy!"
The
commissionaire
sat
down
in
a
chair
and
stared
at
us.
"That
is
the
reward.
I
know
the
Countess
would
give
half
her
fortune
to
get
the
gem
back."
"It
was
lost
at
the
Hotel
Cosmopolitan,
if
I
remember
right,"
I
said.
"Exactly,
on
December
22nd,
just
five
days
ago.
John
Horner,
a
plumber,
was
accused
of
taking
it
from
the
lady’s
jewel-case.
The
evidence
was
strong,
so
the
case
went
to
the
Assizes.
I
have
some
details
here."
He
looked
through
his
newspapers,
found
one,
and
read
a
paragraph:
"Hotel
Cosmopolitan
Jewel
Robbery.
John
Horner,
26,
plumber,
was
charged
with
taking
the
blue
carbuncle
from
the
Countess
of
Morcar’s
jewel-case
on
December
22nd.
James
Ryder,
hotel
worker,
said
he
showed
Horner
to
the
Countess’s
room
to
fix
a
loose
bar.
He
stayed
with
Horner
for
a
while
but
was
called
away.
When
he
returned,
Horner
was
gone,
the
bureau
was
open,
and
the
jewel
case
was
empty
on
the
table.
Ryder
raised
the
alarm,
and
Horner
was
arrested
that
evening,
but
the
stone
was
not
found
on
him
or
in
his
rooms.
Catherine
Cusack,
the
Countess’s
maid,
heard
Ryder’s
cry
and
found
the
room
as
described.
Inspector
Bradstreet
arrested
Horner,
who
protested
his
innocence.
Evidence
of
a
past
robbery
conviction
was
given,
and
the
magistrate
sent
the
case
to
the
Assizes.
Horner
showed
strong
emotion
and
fainted
in
court."
"Hum!
So
much
for
the
police-court,"
said
Holmes,
tossing
aside
the
paper.
"Now
we
must
solve
how
the
jewel-case
leads
to
a
goose
in
Tottenham
Court
Road.
Our
deductions
have
become
more
important
and
less
innocent.
Here
is
the
stone;
it
came
from
the
goose,
and
the
goose
came
from
Mr.
Henry
Baker,
the
man
with
the
bad
hat.
We
must
find
this
man
and
learn
his
part
in
this
mystery.
We
will
start
with
an
ad
in
all
the
evening
papers.
If
that
fails,
I
will
try
other
methods."
"What
will
you
say?"
"Give
me
a
pencil
and
paper.
Now:
‘Found
at
the
corner
of
Goodge
Street,
a
goose
and
a
black
felt
hat.
Mr.
Henry
Baker
can
have
them
by
coming
at
6:00
this
evening
to
221B,
Baker
Street.’
That
is
clear
and
simple."
