Holmes

pulling
the
rope.
"This
room
has
some
strange
things.
Why
would
a
builder
open
a
ventilator
into
another
room
instead
of
outside?"
"That
is
also
quite
new,"
said
the
lady.
"Done
around
the
same
time
as
the
bell-rope?"
asked
Holmes.
"Yes,
several
small
changes
were
made
then."
"Very
interesting
changes—fake
bell-ropes
and
useless
ventilators.
Miss
Stoner,
let's
now
look
at
the
inner
room."
Dr.
Roylott's
room
was
bigger
than
his
step-daughter's
but
simple.
It
had
a
camp-bed,
a
small
shelf
with
technical
books,
an
armchair
by
the
bed,
a
plain
chair
by
the
wall,
a
round
table,
and
a
big
iron
safe.
Holmes
walked
around
and
looked
at
everything
with
great
interest.
"What's
in
here?"
he
asked,
tapping
the
safe.
"My
stepfather's
business
papers."
