Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Capítulo 8, Página 4
"In
India,
Dr.
Roylott
married
my
mother,
Mrs.
Stoner.
She
was
the
widow
of
Major-General
Stoner.
My
sister
Julia
and
I
were
twins,
just
two
years
old
then.
My
mother
had
a
lot
of
money,
not
less
than
£1000
a
year.
She
left
it
all
to
Dr.
Roylott
while
we
lived
with
him.
We
would
get
some
money
if
we
married.
After
we
returned
to
England,
my
mother
died
in
a
train
accident
near
Crewe.
Dr.
Roylott
stopped
trying
to
work
in
London
and
took
us
to
Stoke
Moran,
the
old
family
house.
My
mother's
money
was
enough
for
us,
so
we
thought
we
would
be
happy."
"But
our
stepfather
changed
a
lot.
He
didn't
make
friends
or
visit
neighbors.
People
were
happy
to
see
a
Roylott
back
at
Stoke
Moran,
but
he
stayed
inside
and
only
came
out
to
fight.
The
men
in
his
family
often
had
bad
tempers.
Living
in
the
tropics
made
it
worse
for
him.
He
got
into
many
fights,
and
two
ended
in
court.
He
scared
the
village,
and
people
ran
away
when
he
came.
He
was
very
strong
and
couldn't
control
his
anger."
"Last
week,
he
threw
the
blacksmith
into
a
stream.
I
had
to
pay
money
to
avoid
more
trouble.
He
had
no
friends
except
some
gypsies.
He
let
them
camp
on
our
land
and
joined
them
in
their
tents.
He
sometimes
went
away
with
them
for
weeks.
He
loved
Indian
animals,
which
were
sent
to
him.
He
had
a
cheetah
and
a
baboon
that
roamed
the
grounds.
The
villagers
feared
them
almost
as
much
as
Dr.
Roylott."
"You
can
see
that
my
sister
Julia
and
I
were
not
happy.
No
servant
stayed
with
us,
so
we
did
all
the
housework.
Julia
was
only
thirty
when
she
died,
but
her
hair
was
already
turning
white,
like
mine."
"Your
sister
is
dead,
then?"
"She
died
two
years
ago,
and
I
want
to
talk
about
her
death.
Living
as
we
did,
we
hardly
met
people
our
age.
But
we
had
an
aunt,
Miss
Honoria
Westphail,
near
Harrow.
We
visited
her
sometimes.
Julia
went
there
two
years
ago
at
Christmas.
She
met
a
major
of
marines
and
got
engaged.
My
stepfather
knew
about
the
engagement
and
didn't
mind.
But
two
weeks
before
the
wedding,
something
terrible
happened,
and
I
lost
my
only
companion."
Sherlock
Holmes
was
sitting
with
his
eyes
closed.
He
opened
them
a
little
and
looked
at
his
visitor.
"Please
tell
me
the
details,"
he
said.
