Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 11
"'I
have
heard
that.'"
"A
while
ago,
I
bought
a
small
place
near
Reading.
I
was
lucky
to
find
fuller’s-earth
in
one
of
my
fields.
But
it
was
small
and
between
two
bigger
deposits
on
my
neighbors'
land.
They
didn't
know
their
land
had
something
as
valuable
as
gold.
I
wanted
to
buy
their
land
before
they
found
out,
but
I
had
no
money.
I
told
some
friends,
and
they
suggested
we
secretly
work
our
small
deposit.
This
way,
we
could
earn
money
to
buy
the
neighboring
fields.
We
have
been
doing
this
for
some
time
now,
and
we
built
a
hydraulic
press
to
help
us.
The
press
is
broken,
and
we
need
your
advice.
We
keep
our
secret
very
carefully,
so
if
people
saw
hydraulic
engineers
at
our
house,
they
would
ask
questions.
If
they
found
out
the
truth,
we
couldn't
buy
the
fields
or
carry
out
our
plans.
That's
why
I
asked
you
not
to
tell
anyone
you
are
going
to
Eyford
tonight.
Do
you
understand?"
"I
understand,"
I
said.
"But
I
don't
see
why
you
need
a
hydraulic
press
for
digging
fuller’s-earth,
which
is
like
digging
gravel."
"Ah!"
he
said
with
a
smile,
"we
have
a
special
way.
We
make
the
earth
into
bricks
to
move
them
without
anyone
knowing.
But
that's
just
a
detail.
I
trust
you,
Mr.
Hatherley."
He
stood
up.
"I
expect
you
at
Eyford
at
11."
"I
will
be
there."
"And
not
a
word
to
anyone."
He
looked
at
me
closely,
shook
my
hand
with
a
cold
grip,
and
left
quickly.
"Later,
I
thought
about
this
surprising
job.
I
was
happy
because
the
fee
was
much
more
than
I
usually
got,
and
it
might
lead
to
more
work.
But
the
man's
face
and
manner
made
me
uneasy.
His
story
about
fuller’s-earth
didn't
explain
why
I
needed
to
come
at
midnight
or
why
I
must
keep
it
secret.
Still,
I
decided
not
to
worry,
ate
dinner,
went
to
Paddington,
and
started
my
journey,
keeping
my
promise
not
to
tell
anyone."
"At
Reading,
I
changed
trains
and
stations.
I
caught
the
last
train
to
Eyford
and
arrived
at
the
small,
dim
station
after
eleven.
I
was
the
only
one
to
get
off,
and
only
a
sleepy
porter
with
a
lantern
was
there.
As
I
left
the
station,
I
saw
the
man
from
the
morning
waiting
in
the
shadows.
He
grabbed
my
arm
and
hurried
me
into
a
carriage.
He
closed
the
windows
and
tapped
on
the
wood,
and
we
went
as
fast
as
the
horse
could
go."
