dark.
The
colonel
looked
for
matches,
muttering.
Suddenly,
a
door
opened,
and
a
light
came
out.
A
woman
appeared
with
a
lamp,
looking
at
us.
She
was
pretty,
and
her
dress
was
shiny.
She
spoke
in
another
language,
asking
a
question.
The
colonel
answered
shortly,
and
she
almost
dropped
the
lamp.
He
whispered
to
her,
then
pushed
her
back
into
the
room.
He
came
back
to
me
with
the
lamp."
"'Please
wait
in
this
room
for
a
few
minutes,'
he
said,
opening
a
door.
It
was
a
simple
room
with
a
table
and
some
German
books.
Colonel
Stark
put
the
lamp
on
a
harmonium
by
the
door.
'I
won't
be
long,'
he
said
and
left."
"I
looked
at
the
books.
Two
were
about
science,
and
the
others
were
poetry.
I
went
to
the
window,
hoping
to
see
outside,
but
it
was
covered
with
a
heavy
shutter.
The
house
was
very
quiet.
I
heard
a
clock
ticking
somewhere,
but
nothing
else.
I
felt
uneasy.
Who
were
these
German
people,
and
why
were
they
here?
Where
was
I?
I
was
about
ten
miles
from
Eyford,
but
I
didn't
know
in
which
direction.
Maybe
Reading
or
another
town
was
nearby.
But
it
was
very
quiet,
so
we
were
in
the
country.
I
walked
around
the
room,
humming
to
keep
my
spirits
up,
feeling
I
was
earning
my
fee."
"Suddenly,
the
door
of
my
room

A

stood
there

darkness
behind
her.
The
light
from
my
lamp
showed
her
face.
She
looked
very
scared,
and
I
felt
afraid
too.
She
put
one
finger
to
her
lips,
telling
me

quiet.
She
whispered
a
few
words
in
broken
English,
looking
back
into
the
darkness
like
a
frightened
horse."
"I
would
go,"
she
said,
trying
to
speak
calmly.
"I
would
go.
I
should
not
stay
here.
There
is
nothing
good
for
you."
"But,
madam,"
I
said,
"I
have
not
done
what
I
came
for.
I
cannot
leave
until
I
see
the
machine."
"It
is
not
worth
waiting,"
she
said.
"You
can
leave
now;
no
one
will
stop
you."
I
smiled
and
shook
my
head,
and
she
suddenly
stepped
forward.
"For
the
love
of
Heaven!"
she
whispered,
"leave
here
before
it
is
too
late!"
"I
am
stubborn,
and
I
like
challenges.
I
thought
of
my
fifty-guinea
fee
and
the
long
journey.
Was
it
all
for
nothing?
Why
should
I
leave
without
finishing
my
job
and
getting
paid?
Maybe
this
woman
was
not
thinking
clearly.
So,
I
shook
my
head
again
and
said
I
would
stay.
She
was
about
to
speak
again
when
a
door
slammed
above,
and
footsteps
came
down
the
stairs.
She
listened,
raised
her
hands
in
despair,
and
disappeared
as
quickly
as
she
came."
