Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 14
"I'm
so
happy
you
came,"
she
said
sincerely.
"It's
very
kind
of
you
both.
I
really
don't
know
what
I'd
do
without
your
advice."
"Please
tell
us
what
has
happened."
"I
will,
and
I
must
be
quick
because
I
promised
Mr.
Rucastle
I'd
be
back
before
three.
He
allowed
me
to
come
to
town
this
morning,
though
he
doesn't
know
why."
"Tell
us
everything
in
order."
Holmes
stretched
his
long
legs
towards
the
fire
and
got
comfortable
to
listen.
"First,
I
must
say
that
Mr.
and
Mrs.
Rucastle
haven't
treated
me
badly.
That's
only
fair
to
them.
But
I
can't
understand
them,
and
I
feel
uneasy
about
them."
"What
don't
you
understand?"
"Their
reasons
for
their
actions.
But
I'll
tell
you
everything
as
it
happened.
When
I
arrived,
Mr.
Rucastle
met
me
and
drove
me
to
the
Copper
Beeches.
It's
beautifully
located,
as
he
said,
but
not
beautiful
itself.
It's
a
large,
square
house,
whitewashed
but
stained
by
weather.
There
are
grounds
around
it,
woods
on
three
sides,
and
a
field
on
the
fourth
that
slopes
to
the
Southampton
road,
about
a
hundred
yards
from
the
front
door.
The
front
ground
belongs
to
the
house,
but
the
surrounding
woods
are
part
of
Lord
Southerton's
land.
A
group
of
copper
beeches
in
front
of
the
hall
door
gives
the
place
its
name."
"My
employer
drove
me
over,
and
he
was
as
friendly
as
usual.
That
evening,
he
introduced
me
to
his
wife
and
the
child.
Mr.
Holmes,
there
was
no
truth
in
the
idea
we
discussed
at
Baker
Street.
Mrs.
Rucastle
is
not
mad.
She
is
a
quiet,
pale
woman,
much
younger
than
her
husband.
She
seems
to
be
around
thirty,
while
he
is
probably
about
forty-five.
From
their
talks,
I
learned
they
have
been
married
for
seven
years.
He
was
a
widower,
and
his
only
child
from
his
first
wife
is
the
daughter
who
went
to
Philadelphia.
Mr.
Rucastle
told
me
privately
that
she
left
because
she
disliked
her
stepmother.
Since
the
daughter
must
be
at
least
twenty,
I
can
understand
her
discomfort
with
her
father's
young
wife."
