Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 26
"Don't
touch
me
with
your
dirty
hands,"
said
the
prisoner.
"I
have
royal
blood.
Please
call
me
'sir'
and
'please.'"
"Okay,"
said
Jones,
snickering.
"Well,
please,
sir,
let's
go
upstairs
to
get
a
cab
to
take
you
to
the
police
station."
"That's
better,"
said
John
Clay
calmly.
He
bowed
to
us
and
walked
away
with
the
detective.
"Really,
Mr.
Holmes,"
said
Mr.
Merryweather
as
we
left
the
cellar,
"I
don't
know
how
the
bank
can
thank
or
repay
you.
You've
completely
stopped
one
of
the
most
determined
bank
robbery
attempts
I've
seen."
"I've
had
a
few
scores
to
settle
with
Mr.
John
Clay,"
said
Holmes.
"I've
spent
some
money
on
this,
which
I
expect
the
bank
to
cover,
but
I'm
happy
to
have
had
this
unique
experience
and
to
hear
about
the
Red-headed
League."
"You
see,
Watson,"
he
explained
early
in
the
morning
as
we
sat
with
a
glass
of
whisky
and
soda
in
Baker
Street,
"it
was
clear
from
the
start
that
the
strange
business
of
the
League
advertisement
and
copying
the
Encyclopædia
was
just
to
get
this
not-so-bright
pawnbroker
out
of
the
way
for
hours
each
day.
It
was
a
strange
method,
but
it
was
clever.
Clay's
idea
probably
came
from
his
accomplice's
hair
color.
The
£4
a
week
was
a
bait
to
attract
him,
and
what
was
that
to
them
when
they
were
aiming
for
thousands?
They
placed
the
ad,
one
rogue
ran
the
office,
the
other
encouraged
the
man
to
apply,
and
together
they
ensured
his
absence
every
morning.
When
I
heard
the
assistant
came
for
half
wages,
it
was
clear
he
had
a
strong
reason
for
wanting
the
job."
"But
how
could
you
guess
what
the
reason
was?"
"If
there
had
been
women
in
the
house,
I
might
have
thought
it
was
a
simple
affair.
But
that
wasn't
possible.
The
man's
business
was
small,
and
nothing
in
his
house
explained
the
elaborate
plan
and
spending.
It
had
to
be
something
outside.
What
could
it
be?
I
thought
of
the
assistant's
love
for
photography
and
his
habit
of
going
into
the
cellar.
The
cellar!
That
was
the
key.
Then
I
looked
into
this
mysterious
assistant
and
found
he
was
one
of
the
most
daring
criminals
in
London.
He
was
doing
something
in
the
cellar—something
that
took
many
hours
a
day
for
months.
What
could
it
be?
I
could
only
think
he
was
digging
a
tunnel
to
another
building."
