Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 1
"My
dear
friend,"
said
Sherlock
Holmes
as
we
sat
by
the
fire
in
his
Baker
Street
home,
"life
is
much
stranger
than
anything
we
can
imagine.
We
wouldn't
dare
to
think
of
things
that
are
actually
just
everyday
occurrences.
If
we
could
fly
out
of
this
window,
hover
over
the
city,
remove
the
roofs,
and
look
at
the
strange
things
happening,
the
coincidences,
plans,
and
unexpected
results,
it
would
make
all
fiction
seem
dull
and
predictable."
"I'm
not
so
sure
about
that,"
I
replied.
"The
cases
we
read
about
in
the
papers
are
usually
quite
boring
and
ordinary.
Our
police
reports
are
very
realistic,
but
they
are
neither
interesting
nor
artistic."
"You
need
to
be
selective
and
careful
to
create
a
realistic
effect,"
remarked
Holmes.
"The
police
reports
often
focus
on
the
judge's
comments
rather
than
the
details,
which
are
the
most
important
parts.
Remember,
nothing
is
as
unnatural
as
the
ordinary."
I
smiled
and
shook
my
head.
"I
understand
why
you
think
that,"
I
said.
"In
your
role
as
an
unofficial
advisor
and
helper
to
people
all
over
the
world,
you
see
many
strange
and
bizarre
things.
But
here,"
I
picked
up
the
morning
paper,
"let's
test
it
practically.
Here's
a
headline:
'A
husband's
cruelty
to
his
wife.'
I
know
without
reading
it
that
it's
all
too
familiar.
There's
the
other
woman,
the
drinking,
the
fight,
the
injury,
and
the
sympathetic
sister
or
landlady.
Even
the
worst
writer
couldn't
come
up
with
something
more
basic."
"Your
example
doesn't
help
your
argument,"
said
Holmes,
taking
the
paper
and
looking
at
it.
"This
is
the
Dundas
separation
case,
and
I
helped
clear
up
some
small
points.
The
husband
didn't
drink,
there
was
no
other
woman,
and
his
behavior
was
that
he
ended
every
meal
by
throwing
his
false
teeth
at
his
wife,
which,
you'll
agree,
isn't
something
a
typical
storyteller
would
imagine.
Take
some
snuff,
Doctor,
and
admit
that
I've
won
this
round."
He
offered
me
his
snuffbox,
made
of
old
gold
with
a
big
amethyst
on
the
lid.
Its
beauty
was
so
different
from
his
simple
lifestyle
that
I
had
to
comment
on
it.
"Ah,"
he
said,
"I
forgot
I
hadn't
seen
you
for
a
few
weeks.
It's
a
small
gift
from
the
King
of
Bohemia
for
my
help
with
the
Irene
Adler
papers."
"And
the
ring?"
I
asked,
noticing
a
brilliant
gem
on
his
finger.
