Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 17
"Maybe
it
is,
maybe
it
isn't,
Mr.
Holmes,"
he
said.
"But
if
you're
so
clever,
you
should
know
you're
breaking
the
law
now,
not
me.
I've
done
nothing
illegal,
but
as
long
as
you
keep
that
door
locked,
you're
open
to
charges
of
assault
and
illegal
restraint."
"The
law
can't
touch
you,
as
you
say,"
Holmes
replied,
unlocking
and
opening
the
door.
"But
no
one
deserves
punishment
more
than
you.
If
the
young
lady
had
a
brother
or
a
friend,
they
should
give
you
a
whipping.
By
Jove!"
he
continued,
his
face
flushing
at
the
man's
sneer.
"It's
not
my
duty
to
my
client,
but
there's
a
whip
handy,
and
I
think
I'll
treat
myself
to—"
He
took
two
quick
steps
towards
the
whip,
but
before
he
could
grab
it,
there
was
a
loud
noise
of
steps
on
the
stairs.
The
heavy
hall
door
slammed,
and
we
saw
Mr.
James
Windibank
running
down
the
road
as
fast
as
he
could.
"What
a
cold-blooded
scoundrel!"
said
Holmes,
laughing
as
he
sat
back
in
his
chair.
"That
man
will
keep
committing
crimes
until
he
does
something
terrible
and
ends
up
on
the
gallows.
The
case
has
been
interesting
in
some
ways."
"I
still
can't
fully
see
how
you
figured
it
out,"
I
remarked.
"Well,
it
was
obvious
from
the
start
that
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel
had
a
strong
reason
for
his
strange
behavior.
It
was
also
clear
that
the
only
person
who
benefited
was
the
stepfather.
The
fact
that
the
two
men
were
never
seen
together,
and
one
appeared
when
the
other
was
away,
was
telling.
The
tinted
glasses
and
strange
voice
suggested
a
disguise,
as
did
the
bushy
whiskers.
My
suspicions
were
confirmed
by
his
habit
of
typing
his
signature,
which
meant
his
handwriting
was
familiar
enough
to
her
that
she'd
recognize
it.
All
these
facts,
along
with
many
smaller
ones,
pointed
in
the
same
direction."
"And
how
did
you
confirm
them?"
"Once
I
identified
him,
it
was
easy
to
find
proof.
I
knew
the
company
he
worked
for.
I
took
the
description
and
removed
anything
that
could
be
part
of
a
disguise—the
whiskers,
glasses,
and
voice.
I
sent
it
to
the
company,
asking
if
it
matched
any
of
their
employees.
I
had
noticed
the
typewriter's
peculiarities
and
wrote
to
him
at
his
business
address,
asking
him
to
come
here.
As
expected,
his
reply
was
typewritten
and
showed
the
same
small
but
distinctive
flaws.
The
same
post
brought
me
a
letter
from
Westhouse
&
Marbank,
saying
the
description
matched
their
employee,
James
Windibank.
Voilà
tout!"
"And
Miss
Sutherland?"
