Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 4
I
thought
Sherlock
Holmes
would
be
impatient
with
this
long
story,
but
he
listened
very
carefully.
"Your
own
little
income,"
he
asked,
"does
it
come
from
the
business?"
"Oh
no,
sir.
It's
separate
and
was
left
to
me
by
my
Uncle
Ned
in
Auckland.
It's
in
New
Zealand
stock,
paying
4½
percent.
The
amount
was
two
thousand
five
hundred
pounds,
but
I
can
only
use
the
interest."
"You
interest
me
a
lot,"
said
Holmes.
"And
since
you
get
a
large
sum
like
a
hundred
a
year,
along
with
what
you
earn,
you
probably
travel
a
bit
and
enjoy
yourself.
I
think
a
single
lady
can
manage
well
on
about
£60."
"I
could
manage
with
much
less,
Mr.
Holmes,
but
you
know,
as
long
as
I
live
at
home,
I
don't
want
to
be
a
burden
to
them.
So
they
use
the
money
while
I
stay
with
them.
Of
course,
that's
just
for
now.
Mr.
Windibank
collects
my
interest
every
quarter
and
gives
it
to
my
mother,
and
I
do
alright
with
what
I
earn
from
typewriting.
I
get
twopence
a
sheet,
and
I
can
often
do
fifteen
to
twenty
sheets
a
day."
"You've
explained
your
situation
very
clearly,"
said
Holmes.
"This
is
my
friend,
Dr.
Watson,
and
you
can
speak
to
him
as
freely
as
you
do
to
me.
Please
tell
us
about
your
connection
with
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel."
Miss
Sutherland's
face
turned
red,
and
she
nervously
picked
at
her
jacket.
"I
met
him
first
at
the
gasfitters'
ball,"
she
said.
"They
used
to
send
father
tickets
when
he
was
alive,
and
after
he
passed,
they
sent
them
to
my
mother.
Mr.
Windibank
didn't
want
us
to
go.
He
never
wanted
us
to
go
anywhere.
He
would
get
very
angry
if
I
wanted
to
join
even
a
Sunday-school
event.
But
this
time
I
was
determined
to
go,
and
I
did.
What
right
did
he
have
to
stop
me?
He
said
the
people
weren't
suitable
for
us,
even
though
all
father's
friends
would
be
there.
He
also
said
I
had
nothing
to
wear,
but
I
had
my
purple
plush
dress
that
I'd
never
even
taken
out
of
the
drawer.
In
the
end,
when
nothing
else
worked,
he
went
to
France
for
business,
but
my
mother
and
I
went
with
Mr.
Hardy,
our
former
foreman,
and
that's
where
I
met
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel."
"I
suppose,"
said
Holmes,
"that
when
Mr.
Windibank
returned
from
France,
he
was
upset
that
you
went
to
the
ball."
