Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Boscombe Valley Mystery
Capítulo 4, Página 27
"When
I
arrived,
he
was
talking
with
his
son,
so
I
smoked
a
cigar
and
waited
behind
a
tree
until
he
was
alone.
Listening
to
him,
all
my
anger
and
bitterness
surfaced.
He
was
telling
his
son
to
marry
my
daughter,
as
if
she
had
no
choice.
It
made
me
furious
that
I
and
all
I
loved
were
in
this
man’s
power.
Could
I
break
free?
I
was
already
dying
and
desperate.
My
mind
was
clear,
and
I
was
strong
enough,
but
I
knew
my
fate
was
sealed.
My
memory
and
my
daughter
could
be
saved
if
I
silenced
him.
I
did
it,
Mr.
Holmes.
I
would
do
it
again.
I
have
sinned
deeply,
but
I
have
lived
a
life
of
suffering
to
make
up
for
it.
But
I
couldn’t
let
my
daughter
be
trapped
like
me.
I
struck
him
down
like
a
dangerous
animal.
His
cry
brought
his
son
back,
but
I
had
already
hidden
in
the
woods.
I
had
to
return
for
the
cloak
I
dropped
while
escaping.
That’s
the
true
story,
gentlemen,
of
what
happened."
"Well,
it
is
not
for
me
to
judge
you,"
said
Holmes
as
the
old
man
signed
the
statement.
"I
pray
we
never
face
such
a
temptation."
"I
hope
not,
sir.
What
do
you
plan
to
do?"
"Considering
your
health,
nothing.
You
know
you
will
soon
answer
for
your
actions
at
a
higher
court
than
the
Assizes.
I
will
keep
your
confession.
If
McCarthy
is
condemned,
I
will
have
to
use
it.
If
not,
it
will
never
be
seen,
and
your
secret
will
stay
with
us,
whether
you
are
alive
or
dead."
"Farewell,
then,"
said
the
old
man
solemnly.
"Your
own
deathbeds,
when
they
come,
will
be
easier
knowing
you
gave
peace
to
mine."
Shaking,
he
slowly
left
the
room.
"God
help
us!"
said
Holmes
after
a
long
silence.
"Why
does
fate
play
tricks
on
helpless
people?
I
always
think
of
Baxter’s
words
in
such
cases
and
say,
'There,
but
for
the
grace
of
God,
goes
Sherlock
Holmes.'"
James
McCarthy
was
acquitted
at
the
Assizes
because
of
several
objections
Holmes
made
and
gave
to
the
defense.
Old
Turner
lived
for
seven
months
after
our
meeting,
but
he
has
now
passed
away.
There
is
hope
that
the
son
and
daughter
will
live
happily,
unaware
of
the
dark
past.
