I

though
there
are
a
few
interesting

He
took
a
copy
of
the
local
Herefordshire
paper
from
his
bundle
and
pointed
to
a
paragraph
where
the
young
man
explained
what
happened.
I
settled
in
the
corner
of
the
carriage
and
read
it
carefully.
It
said:
"Mr.
James
McCarthy,
the
only
son
of
the
deceased,
was
called
and
gave
his
account:
'I
had
been
away
in
Bristol
for
three
days
and
returned
on
the
morning
of
Monday,
the
3rd.
My
father
wasn't
home
when
I
arrived,
and
the
maid
said
he
went
to
Ross
with
John
Cobb,
the
groom.
After
I
returned,
I
heard
his
trap
in
the
yard
and
saw
him
get
out
and
walk
away
quickly,
but
I
didn't
know
where
he
was
going.
I
took
my
gun
and
walked
towards
Boscombe
Pool
to
visit
the
rabbit
warren
on
the
other
side.
On
my
way,
I
saw
William
Crowder,
the
gamekeeper,
as
he
said
in
his
evidence,
but
he's
wrong
in
thinking
I
was
following
my
father.
I
didn't
know
he
was
ahead
of
me.
About
a
hundred
yards
from
the
pool,
I
heard
"Cooee!"
which
was
a
usual
signal
between
my
father
and
me.
I
hurried
forward
and
found
him
by
the
pool.
He
seemed
surprised
to
see
me
and
asked
roughly
what
I
was
doing
there.
We
had
a
conversation
that
led
to
high
words
and
almost
to
blows,
as
he
had
a
violent
temper.
Seeing
his
anger
growing,
I
left
and
returned
to
Hatherley
Farm.
I
hadn't
gone
more
than
150
yards
when
I
heard
a
terrible
cry
behind
me,
which
made
me
run
back.
I
found
my
father
dying
on
the
ground,
his
head
terribly
injured.
I
dropped
my
gun
and
held
him,
but
he
died
almost
instantly.
I
knelt
beside
him
for
a
few
minutes,
then
went
to
Mr.
Turner's
lodge-keeper,
as
his
house
was
closest,
for
help.
I
saw
no
one
near
my
father
when
I
returned
and
have
no
idea
how
he
was
injured.
He
wasn't
popular,
being
cold
and
unfriendly,
but
as
far
as
I
know,
he
had
no
active
enemies.
I
know
nothing
more
about
it.'"
"The
Coroner:
Did
your
father
say
anything
before
he
died?"
"Witness:
He
mumbled
some
words,
but
I
only
caught
something
about
a
rat."
