Klux

Holmes
turned
the
pages
of
the
book
on
his
knee.
"Here
it
is,"
he
said
after
a
moment:
"'Ku
Klux
Klan.
A
name
from
the
sound
of
cocking
a
rifle.
This
secret
society
was
formed
by
ex-Confederate
soldiers
in
the
Southern
states
after
the
Civil
War.
It
quickly
spread
to
Tennessee,
Louisiana,
the
Carolinas,
Georgia,
and
Florida.
Its
power
was
used
for
political
purposes,
mainly
terrorizing
black
voters
and
driving
away
those
who
opposed
it.
Warnings
were
sent
to
victims
in
odd
but
known
forms—oak
leaves,
melon
seeds,
or
orange
pips.
On
receiving
this,
the
victim
could
either
change
their
ways
or
leave
the
country.
If
they
didn't,
death
would
come,
usually
in
a
strange
way.
The
society
was
so
well-organized
that
hardly
anyone
escaped
its
threats
or
traced
its
crimes
back
to
the
members.
For
years,
it
thrived
despite
efforts
from
the
U.S.
government
and
the
better
Southern
communities.
It
suddenly
collapsed
in
1869,
but
there
have
been
similar
outbreaks
since.'”
"You
will
notice,"
said
Holmes,
putting
down
the
book,
"that
the
sudden
end
of
the
society
happened
when
Openshaw
left
America
with
their
papers.
This
may
be
connected.
It's
not
surprising
that
he
and
his
family
have
some
dangerous
people
after
them.
You
can
see
that
this
register
and
diary
might
involve
important
people
in
the
South,
and
many
won't
sleep
well
until
they
get
it
back."
"Then
the
page
we
saw—"
"Is
just
what
we
expected.
It
said,
if
I
remember,
'sent
the
pips
to
A,
B,
and
C'—meaning
a
warning
from
the
society.
Then
it
notes
that
A
and
B
left
the
country,
and
finally
that
C
was
visited,
with
a
likely
bad
outcome
for
C.
Well,
Doctor,
I
think
we
can
shine
some
light
on
this
mystery,
and
I
believe
young
Openshaw's
best
chance
is
to
follow
my
advice.
There's
nothing
more
to
do
or
say
tonight,
so
hand
me
my
violin,
and
let's
forget
for
a
while
the
terrible
weather
and
even
worse
behavior
of
people."
