Holmes
muttered,
pulling
at
the
rope.
"There
are
some
odd
things
about
this
room.
For
example,
why
would
a
builder
open
a
ventilator
into
another
room
instead
of
outside?"
"That
is
also
quite
modern,"
said
the
lady.
"Done
around
the
same
time
as
the
bell-rope?"
Holmes
asked.
"Yes,
several
small
changes
were
made
then."
"They
seem
very
interesting—dummy
bell-ropes
and
ventilators
that
don’t
ventilate.
With
your
permission,
Miss
Stoner,
we’ll
now
look
into
the
next
room."
Dr.
Grimesby
Roylott’s
room
was
larger
than
his
step-daughter’s
but
just
as
simply
furnished.
It
had
a
camp-bed,
a
small
wooden
shelf
full
of
mostly
technical
books,
an
armchair
by
the
bed,
a
plain
wooden
chair
against
the
wall,
a
round
table,
and
a
large
iron
safe.
Holmes
walked
slowly
around,
examining
everything
with
great
interest.
"What’s
in
here?"
he
asked,
tapping
the
safe.
"My
stepfather’s
business
papers."
