Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Capítulo 8, Página 4
"While
in
India,
Dr.
Roylott
married
my
mother,
Mrs.
Stoner.
She
was
the
young
widow
of
Major-General
Stoner
of
the
Bengal
Artillery.
My
sister
Julia
and
I
were
twins,
only
two
years
old
at
the
time.
My
mother
had
a
good
amount
of
money,
not
less
than
£1000
a
year.
She
left
it
all
to
Dr.
Roylott
as
long
as
we
lived
with
him.
She
also
arranged
for
us
to
get
money
if
we
married.
After
we
returned
to
England,
my
mother
died
in
a
train
accident
near
Crewe
eight
years
ago.
Dr.
Roylott
stopped
trying
to
start
a
practice
in
London
and
took
us
to
live
in
the
old
house
at
Stoke
Moran.
The
money
my
mother
left
was
enough
for
us,
and
there
seemed
to
be
nothing
to
stop
our
happiness."
"But
then
our
stepfather
changed
terribly.
Instead
of
making
friends
with
our
neighbors,
who
were
happy
to
see
a
Roylott
back,
he
stayed
inside
and
only
came
out
to
have
fierce
arguments.
The
men
in
our
family
have
a
history
of
violent
tempers,
and
my
stepfather’s
was
worse
after
living
in
the
tropics.
He
had
many
disgraceful
fights,
two
of
which
ended
in
court.
He
became
feared
in
the
village
because
he
was
very
strong
and
uncontrollable
when
angry."
"Last
week,
he
threw
the
local
blacksmith
into
a
stream.
I
had
to
pay
all
the
money
I
could
gather
to
avoid
another
scandal.
He
had
no
friends
except
for
some
wandering
gypsies.
He
let
them
camp
on
our
land
and
sometimes
stayed
with
them
for
weeks.
He
also
loved
Indian
animals,
sent
to
him
by
a
friend.
Right
now,
he
has
a
cheetah
and
a
baboon
that
roam
freely
on
the
grounds,
scaring
the
villagers
almost
as
much
as
he
does."
"You
can
imagine
that
my
sister
Julia
and
I
didn't
have
much
joy
in
our
lives.
No
servant
would
stay
with
us,
so
we
did
all
the
housework.
She
was
only
thirty
when
she
died,
but
her
hair
had
already
started
to
turn
white,
like
mine."
"Your
sister
is
dead,
then?"
"Yes,
she
died
two
years
ago,
and
I
want
to
talk
about
her
death.
Living
as
we
did,
we
hardly
met
anyone
our
age.
But
we
had
an
aunt,
my
mother’s
sister,
Miss
Honoria
Westphail,
who
lived
near
Harrow.
We
sometimes
visited
her.
Julia
went
there
two
Christmases
ago
and
met
a
retired
major
of
marines.
They
got
engaged.
When
my
sister
returned,
my
stepfather
heard
about
the
engagement
but
didn’t
object.
However,
two
weeks
before
the
wedding,
a
terrible
event
happened,
taking
away
my
only
companion."
Sherlock
Holmes
was
leaning
back
with
his
eyes
closed,
but
now
he
opened
them
slightly
and
looked
at
his
visitor.
"Please,
be
exact
with
the
details,"
he
said.
