drove
for

Colonel
Lysander
Stark
said
it
was
only
seven
miles,
but
it
felt
more
like
twelve
because
of
our
speed
and
the
time
it
took.
He
sat
next
to
me
in
silence,
and
I
noticed
him
watching
me
closely.
The
roads
were
not
good,
and
we
bumped
and
jolted
a
lot.
I
tried
to
look
out
the
windows
to
see
where
we
were,
but
they
were
frosted
glass,
and

could
only
see
occasional
lights
passing
by.
I
made
some
small
talk
to
break

silence,

the

replied
with
short
answers,
and

conversation
soon
died.

rough
road
turned
into

smooth
gravel
drive,
and

carriage
stopped.
Colonel

out,
and
as
I
followed,
he
quickly
led

into

porch.
We
stepped
out
of
the
carriage
and
into
the
hall,
so

didn't
see
the
front
of
the
house.
