Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 16
"Suddenly,
in
the
silence,
I
heard
a
sound
that
made
my
heart
race.
It
was
the
noise
of
levers
and
the
hiss
of
a
leaking
cylinder.
He
had
started
the
engine.
The
lamp
was
still
on
the
floor
where
I
had
left
it.
By
its
light,
I
could
see
the
black
ceiling
slowly
coming
down
on
me.
It
moved
in
jerks,
but
I
knew
it
would
soon
crush
me.
I
screamed
and
threw
myself
against
the
door,
scratching
at
the
lock.
I
begged
the
colonel
to
let
me
out,
but
the
levers'
noise
drowned
my
cries.
The
ceiling
was
just
above
my
head,
and
I
could
touch
its
rough
surface.
I
realized
that
how
I
died
would
depend
on
my
position.
If
I
lay
on
my
face,
my
spine
would
break.
I
shuddered
at
the
thought.
Maybe
it
was
easier
the
other
way,
but
could
I
lie
and
watch
the
ceiling
come
down?
I
was
almost
unable
to
stand
when
I
saw
something
that
gave
me
hope."
"I
mentioned
that
the
floor
and
ceiling
were
iron,
but
the
walls
were
wood.
As
I
looked
around,
I
noticed
a
thin
line
of
yellow
light
between
two
boards.
It
widened
as
a
small
panel
opened.
For
a
moment,
I
couldn't
believe
it
was
a
door
to
escape.
The
next
moment,
I
threw
myself
through
it
and
lay
half-fainting
on
the
other
side.
The
panel
closed
behind
me,
but
the
crash
of
the
lamp
and
the
clang
of
the
metal
slabs
told
me
how
close
my
escape
had
been."
"I
came
back
to
my
senses
when
someone
pulled
frantically
at
my
wrist.
I
found
myself
on
the
stone
floor
of
a
narrow
corridor.
A
woman
was
bending
over
me,
pulling
me
with
one
hand
and
holding
a
candle
with
the
other.
It
was
the
same
friend
whose
warning
I
had
ignored."
"'Come!
Come!'
she
said
breathlessly.
'They
will
be
here
soon.
They
will
see
you
are
gone.
Don't
waste
time,
come!'"
"This
time,
I
listened
to
her
advice.
I
got
to
my
feet
and
ran
with
her
along
the
corridor
and
down
a
winding
stair.
It
led
to
another
passage,
and
just
as
we
reached
it,
we
heard
running
feet
and
shouting
voices.
One
voice
was
on
our
floor,
the
other
below.
My
guide
stopped,
looking
around
like
she
was
out
of
ideas.
Then
she
opened
a
door
to
a
bedroom,
where
the
moon
shone
brightly
through
the
window."
"'This
is
your
only
chance,'
she
said.
'It's
high,
but
you
might
be
able
to
jump.'"
"As
she
spoke,
a
light
appeared
at
the
end
of
the
passage.
I
saw
Colonel
Lysander
Stark
rushing
with
a
lantern
in
one
hand
and
a
weapon
like
a
cleaver
in
the
other.
I
ran
across
the
bedroom,
opened
the
window,
and
looked
out.
The
garden
looked
peaceful
and
inviting
in
the
moonlight,
and
it
couldn't
be
more
than
thirty
feet
down.
I
climbed
onto
the
sill
but
hesitated
to
jump.
I
wanted
to
hear
what
happened
between
my
savior
and
the
man
chasing
me.
If
she
was
harmed,
I
would
go
back
to
help
her.
The
thought
had
barely
crossed
my
mind
when
he
reached
the
door.
He
pushed
past
her,
but
she
wrapped
her
arms
around
him,
trying
to
hold
him
back."
"'Fritz!
Fritz!'
she
cried
in
English.
'Remember
your
promise
after
last
time.
You
said
it
wouldn't
happen
again.
He
will
be
silent!
Oh,
he
will
be
silent!'"
