Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 2
I
picked
up
the
card.
It
read:
"Mr.
Victor
Hatherley,
hydraulic
engineer,
16A
Victoria
Street
(3rd
floor)."
That
was
the
name
and
address
of
my
visitor.
"I’m
sorry
to
have
kept
you
waiting,"
I
said,
sitting
down.
"You’ve
had
a
long
night
journey,
which
is
tiring
in
itself."
"Oh,
my
night
was
anything
but
boring,"
he
said,
and
laughed.
He
laughed
loudly,
leaning
back
in
his
chair.
His
laughter
made
me
uneasy.
"Stop
it!"
I
said.
"Calm
yourself!"
I
poured
some
water
from
a
carafe.
It
didn’t
help.
He
was
having
one
of
those
hysterical
fits
that
come
after
a
big
crisis.
Soon,
he
calmed
down,
looking
very
tired
and
pale.
"I
made
a
fool
of
myself,"
he
said,
gasping.
"Not
at
all.
Drink
this."
I
added
some
brandy
to
the
water,
and
color
slowly
returned
to
his
cheeks.
"That’s
better,"
he
said.
"Now,
Doctor,
could
you
please
look
at
my
thumb,
or
rather
where
my
thumb
used
to
be?"
He
unwrapped
the
handkerchief
and
showed
me
his
hand.
Even
I,
with
my
experience,
shuddered
at
the
sight.
Four
fingers
were
left,
and
there
was
a
nasty
red
area
where
the
thumb
had
been.
It
looked
like
it
had
been
cut
or
torn
off
completely.
