Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 14
"I'm
so
glad
you've
come,"
she
said
earnestly.
"It's
so
kind
of
you
both,
but
I
really
don't
know
what
I
would
do.
Your
advice
will
be
invaluable
to
me."
"Please,
tell
us
what
has
happened
to
you."
"I
will,
and
I
must
be
quick,
for
I
promised
Mr.
Rucastle
to
be
back
before
three.
I
got
his
permission
to
come
to
town
this
morning,
though
he
has
no
idea
why."
"Let's
hear
everything
in
order."
Holmes
stretched
his
long
legs
toward
the
fire
and
settled
in
to
listen.
"First,
I
should
say
that
I've
not
been
treated
badly
by
Mr.
and
Mrs.
Rucastle.
It's
only
fair
to
mention
that.
But
I
can't
understand
them,
and
I
am
uneasy
about
them."
"What
do
you
not
understand?"
"Their
reasons
for
their
behavior.
But
I'll
tell
you
everything
as
it
happened.
When
I
arrived,
Mr.
Rucastle
met
me
here
and
drove
me
in
his
dog-cart
to
the
Copper
Beeches.
It's
beautifully
located,
as
he
said,
but
not
beautiful
itself.
It's
a
large
square
house,
whitewashed
but
stained
and
streaked
with
damp
and
bad
weather.
There
are
grounds
around
it,
woods
on
three
sides,
and
on
the
fourth,
a
field
that
slopes
down
to
the
Southampton
high
road,
which
curves
past
about
a
hundred
yards
from
the
front
door.
The
land
in
front
belongs
to
the
house,
but
the
surrounding
woods
are
part
of
Lord
Southerton’s
estate.
A
group
of
copper
beeches
right
in
front
of
the
hall
door
gives
the
place
its
name."
"My
employer
drove
me
over,
as
friendly
as
ever,
and
that
evening
he
introduced
me
to
his
wife
and
their
child.
There
was
no
truth,
Mr.
Holmes,
in
the
idea
we
discussed
at
Baker
Street.
Mrs.
Rucastle
is
not
mad.
She's
a
quiet,
pale
woman,
much
younger
than
her
husband,
probably
around
thirty,
while
he's
at
least
forty-five.
From
their
talks,
I
gathered
they’ve
been
married
for
about
seven
years,
that
he
was
a
widower,
and
his
only
child
from
the
first
marriage
was
the
daughter
who
went
to
Philadelphia.
Mr.
Rucastle
privately
told
me
she
left
because
she
disliked
her
stepmother.
Since
the
daughter
must
be
at
least
twenty,
I
can
imagine
her
discomfort
with
a
young
stepmother."
