Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 17
"You
may
find
it
a
bit
disjointed,
and
there
might
not
be
much
connection
between
the
events
I
describe.
On
my
very
first
day
at
the
Copper
Beeches,
Mr.
Rucastle
took
me
to
a
small
outbuilding
near
the
kitchen
door.
As
we
approached,
I
heard
the
sharp
rattle
of
a
chain
and
the
sound
of
a
large
animal
moving
around."
“‘Look
in
here!’
said
Mr.
Rucastle,
showing
me
a
gap
between
two
planks.
‘Isn't
he
a
beauty?’”
“I
peered
through
and
saw
two
glowing
eyes
and
a
vague
shape
huddled
in
the
shadows.”
“‘Don't
be
scared,’
my
employer
said,
laughing
at
my
startled
reaction.
‘It's
just
Carlo,
my
mastiff.
I
say
he's
mine,
but
really,
only
old
Toller,
my
groom,
can
handle
him.
We
feed
him
once
a
day,
not
too
much,
so
he's
always
eager.
Toller
lets
him
loose
every
night,
and
woe
to
any
trespasser
he
catches.
For
heaven's
sake,
don't
ever
step
outside
at
night,
or
your
life
could
be
at
risk.’”
“The
warning
was
serious,
for
two
nights
later,
I
looked
out
of
my
bedroom
window
around
two
in
the
morning.
The
moonlight
made
the
lawn
almost
as
bright
as
day.
I
was
captivated
by
the
scene's
beauty
when
I
noticed
something
moving
under
the
copper
beeches'
shadow.
As
it
came
into
the
moonlight,
I
saw
it
was
a
giant
dog,
as
big
as
a
calf,
tawny-colored,
with
drooping
jowls,
a
black
muzzle,
and
large
bones.
It
walked
slowly
across
the
lawn
and
disappeared
into
the
shadows.
That
terrifying
guardian
chilled
me
more
than
any
burglar
could
have.”
“Now
I
have
a
strange
experience
to
share.
As
you
know,
I
had
cut
my
hair
in
London
and
placed
it
in
a
coil
at
the
bottom
of
my
trunk.
One
evening,
after
the
child
was
in
bed,
I
started
examining
the
room's
furniture
and
rearranging
my
things.
There
was
an
old
chest
of
drawers,
with
the
top
two
empty
and
open,
but
the
bottom
one
locked.
I
filled
the
first
two
with
my
linen,
but
still
had
more
to
store,
so
I
was
annoyed
not
to
use
the
third
drawer.
Thinking
it
might
be
locked
by
mistake,
I
tried
my
keys.
The
first
one
fit
perfectly,
and
I
opened
the
drawer.
Inside
was
only
one
thing,
but
you'd
never
guess
what
it
was.
It
was
my
coil
of
hair.”
“I
picked
it
up
and
examined
it.
It
was
the
same
peculiar
color
and
thickness.
But
then
I
realized
the
impossibility
of
it.
How
could
my
hair
be
locked
in
the
drawer?
With
trembling
hands,
I
opened
my
trunk,
emptied
it,
and
took
out
my
own
hair.
I
laid
the
two
together,
and
they
were
identical.
Wasn't
it
extraordinary?
No
matter
how
I
puzzled
over
it,
I
couldn't
understand.
I
put
the
strange
hair
back
in
the
drawer
and
said
nothing
to
the
Rucastles,
feeling
guilty
for
opening
a
locked
drawer.”
“I'm
naturally
observant,
Mr.
Holmes,
and
soon
I
had
a
good
idea
of
the
house's
layout.
However,
one
wing
seemed
unoccupied.
A
door
leading
to
the
Tollers'
quarters
opened
into
this
suite,
but
it
was
always
locked.
One
day,
as
I
went
upstairs,
I
met
Mr.
Rucastle
coming
out
of
this
door,
keys
in
hand,
looking
very
different
from
the
jovial
man
I
knew.
His
cheeks
were
red,
his
brow
furrowed
with
anger,
and
the
veins
on
his
temples
stood
out.
He
locked
the
door
and
hurried
past
me
without
a
word.”
