Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 8
"I
never
hope
to
see
such
a
sight
again,
Mr.
Holmes.
From
north,
south,
east,
and
west,
every
man
with
a
hint
of
red
in
his
hair
came
to
the
city
for
the
advertisement.
Fleet
Street
was
packed
with
red-headed
people,
and
Pope’s
Court
looked
like
a
coster’s
orange
barrow.
I
wouldn't
have
thought
there
were
so
many
in
the
whole
country
brought
together
by
a
single
ad.
Every
shade
of
color
was
there—straw,
lemon,
orange,
brick,
Irish-setter,
liver,
clay;
but
as
Spaulding
said,
not
many
had
the
real
vivid
flame
color.
When
I
saw
how
many
were
waiting,
I
felt
like
giving
up,
but
Spaulding
insisted
we
continue.
How
he
did
it,
I
don't
know,
but
he
pushed
and
pulled
until
we
reached
the
steps
to
the
office.
There
was
a
double
line
on
the
stairs,
some
going
up
hopeful,
some
coming
down
disappointed;
but
we
squeezed
in
and
soon
found
ourselves
in
the
office."
"Your
experience
has
been
quite
entertaining,"
remarked
Holmes
as
his
client
paused
and
refreshed
his
memory
with
a
pinch
of
snuff.
"Please
continue
your
fascinating
story."
"There
was
nothing
in
the
office
but
a
couple
of
wooden
chairs
and
a
deal
table,
behind
which
sat
a
small
man
with
hair
even
redder
than
mine.
He
spoke
a
few
words
to
each
candidate,
then
always
found
some
fault
to
disqualify
them.
Getting
a
vacancy
wasn't
as
easy
as
it
seemed.
However,
when
it
was
our
turn,
the
little
man
was
much
more
favorable
to
me
than
to
the
others,
and
he
closed
the
door
as
we
entered,
to
speak
with
us
privately."
"'This
is
Mr.
Jabez
Wilson,'
said
my
assistant,
'and
he
is
willing
to
fill
a
vacancy
in
the
League.'"
"'And
he
is
perfectly
suited
for
it,'
the
man
replied.
'He
meets
every
requirement.
I
can't
remember
seeing
anything
so
fine.'
He
stepped
back,
tilted
his
head,
and
stared
at
my
hair
until
I
felt
quite
shy.
Then
suddenly
he
jumped
forward,
shook
my
hand,
and
congratulated
me
warmly
on
my
success."
"'It
would
be
unfair
to
hesitate,'
he
said.
'I
hope
you'll
forgive
me
for
taking
a
simple
precaution.'
Then
he
grabbed
my
hair
with
both
hands
and
pulled
until
I
shouted
in
pain.
'Your
eyes
are
watering,'
he
said,
letting
go.
'Everything
seems
to
be
in
order.
But
we
must
be
cautious,
as
we've
been
tricked
before
by
wigs
and
once
by
paint.
I
could
tell
you
stories
about
cobbler's
wax
that
would
make
you
doubt
human
nature.'
He
went
to
the
window
and
yelled
loudly
that
the
position
was
filled.
A
disappointed
groan
came
from
below,
and
the
crowd
slowly
dispersed
until
only
my
red
hair
and
the
manager's
were
left."
"'My
name,'
he
said,
'is
Mr.
Duncan
Ross,
and
I
am
one
of
the
beneficiaries
of
the
fund
left
by
our
generous
benefactor.
Are
you
married,
Mr.
Wilson?
Do
you
have
a
family?'"
"I
replied
that
I
did
not."
