Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
Capítulo 3, Página 16
"Oh,
it
won’t
do—really
it
won’t,"
said
Holmes
smoothly.
"There’s
no
getting
out
of
it,
Mr.
Windibank.
It’s
too
obvious,
and
it
was
an
insult
when
you
said
it
was
impossible
for
me
to
solve
such
a
simple
question.
That’s
right!
Sit
down
and
let’s
discuss
it."
Our
visitor
collapsed
into
a
chair,
his
face
ghastly
and
sweat
on
his
brow.
"It—it’s
not
a
crime,"
he
stammered.
"I’m
afraid
it’s
not.
But
between
us,
Windibank,
it
was
a
cruel,
selfish,
and
heartless
trick
in
a
small
way
as
ever
came
before
me.
Now,
let
me
go
over
the
events,
and
correct
me
if
I’m
wrong."
The
man
sat
hunched
in
his
chair,
his
head
on
his
chest,
like
someone
utterly
crushed.
Holmes
put
his
feet
up
on
the
mantelpiece,
leaned
back
with
his
hands
in
his
pockets,
and
began
speaking,
more
to
himself
than
to
us.
"The
man
married
a
much
older
woman
for
her
money,"
he
said,
"and
he
used
the
daughter's
money
while
she
lived
with
them.
It
was
a
significant
amount
for
people
in
their
situation,
and
losing
it
would
have
been
a
big
problem.
It
was
worth
making
an
effort
to
keep
it.
The
daughter
was
kind
and
warm-hearted,
so
with
her
good
looks
and
small
income,
she
wouldn't
stay
single
for
long.
Her
marriage
would
mean
losing
a
hundred
pounds
a
year,
so
what
did
her
stepfather
do
to
stop
it?
He
kept
her
at
home
and
stopped
her
from
meeting
people
her
own
age.
But
soon
he
realized
that
wouldn't
work
forever.
She
became
restless,
demanded
her
rights,
and
finally
insisted
on
going
to
a
certain
ball.
What
did
her
clever
stepfather
do
then?
He
came
up
with
a
plan
more
clever
than
kind.
With
his
wife's
help,
he
disguised
himself
with
tinted
glasses,
a
fake
moustache,
and
bushy
whiskers,
changed
his
clear
voice
to
a
whisper,
and,
taking
advantage
of
the
girl's
poor
eyesight,
he
appeared
as
Mr.
Hosmer
Angel,
keeping
other
suitors
away
by
pretending
to
be
in
love
with
her
himself."
"It
was
only
a
joke
at
first,"
groaned
our
visitor.
"We
never
thought
she
would
be
so
taken
in."
"Probably
not.
But
the
young
lady
was
certainly
swept
away,
and
since
she
believed
her
stepfather
was
in
France,
she
never
suspected
any
trickery.
She
was
flattered
by
the
man's
attention,
and
her
mother's
loud
praise
increased
the
effect.
Then
Mr.
Angel
started
visiting,
as
it
was
clear
the
situation
should
be
taken
as
far
as
possible
to
have
a
real
impact.
There
were
meetings
and
an
engagement,
which
would
ensure
her
affections
didn't
turn
to
anyone
else.
But
the
deception
couldn't
last
forever.
The
fake
trips
to
France
were
becoming
cumbersome.
The
plan
was
to
end
the
affair
dramatically,
leaving
a
lasting
impression
on
the
young
lady
and
preventing
her
from
considering
other
suitors
for
a
long
time.
Hence
the
vows
of
fidelity
on
a
Testament
and
the
hints
about
something
happening
on
the
wedding
morning.
James
Windibank
wanted
Miss
Sutherland
to
be
so
attached
to
Hosmer
Angel
and
so
unsure
of
his
fate
that
she
wouldn't
consider
another
man
for
at
least
ten
years.
He
took
her
to
the
church
door,
and
then,
unable
to
go
further,
he
vanished
by
the
old
trick
of
stepping
into
one
door
of
a
cab
and
out
the
other.
I
believe
that
was
the
sequence
of
events,
Mr.
Windibank!"
Our
visitor
regained
some
confidence
while
Holmes
was
speaking,
and
he
stood
up
with
a
cold
sneer
on
his
pale
face.
