Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
Capítulo 7, Página 24
Ryder
suddenly
threw
himself
on
the
rug
and
clutched
at
Holmes's
knees.
"For
God's
sake,
have
mercy!"
he
cried.
"Think
of
my
father!
My
mother!
It
would
break
their
hearts.
I've
never
done
wrong
before!
I
swear
I
never
will
again.
I'll
swear
it
on
a
Bible.
Oh,
don't
take
it
to
court!
Please,
don't!"
"Get
back
in
your
chair!"
said
Holmes
sternly.
"It's
easy
to
beg
now,
but
you
didn't
care
much
about
poor
Horner
in
the
dock
for
a
crime
he
didn't
commit."
"I
will
run
away,
Mr.
Holmes.
I'll
leave
the
country,
sir.
Then
the
case
against
him
will
fall
apart."
"Hmm!
We
will
discuss
that.
Now,
let's
hear
the
true
story
of
what
happened
next.
How
did
the
stone
get
into
the
goose,
and
how
did
the
goose
end
up
on
the
market?
Tell
us
the
truth,
as
it's
your
only
hope."
Ryder
licked
his
dry
lips.
"I'll
tell
you
exactly
what
happened,
sir,"
he
said.
"When
Horner
was
arrested,
I
thought
it
best
to
get
away
with
the
stone
immediately,
as
I
didn't
know
when
the
police
might
decide
to
search
me
and
my
room.
There
was
no
safe
place
at
the
hotel.
I
left
as
if
on
an
errand
and
went
to
my
sister's
house.
She
had
married
a
man
named
Oakshott
and
lived
on
Brixton
Road,
where
she
raised
geese
for
the
market.
On
the
way,
every
man
I
saw
seemed
like
a
policeman
or
detective;
and
even
though
it
was
a
cold
night,
sweat
was
pouring
down
my
face
by
the
time
I
reached
Brixton
Road.
My
sister
asked
what
was
wrong
and
why
I
looked
so
pale,
but
I
told
her
I
was
upset
by
the
jewel
theft
at
the
hotel.
Then
I
went
into
the
backyard,
smoked
a
pipe,
and
wondered
what
to
do
next.
"I
once
had
a
friend
named
Maudsley,
who
went
bad
and
recently
served
time
in
Pentonville.
One
day,
he
talked
to
me
about
how
thieves
could
get
rid
of
stolen
goods.
I
knew
he
would
be
loyal
to
me
because
I
knew
a
few
things
about
him;
so
I
decided
to
go
straight
to
Kilburn,
where
he
lived,
and
trust
him
with
my
secret.
He
would
show
me
how
to
turn
the
stone
into
money.
But
how
could
I
get
to
him
safely?
I
thought
of
the
fear
I
had
felt
coming
from
the
hotel.
I
could
be
stopped
and
searched
at
any
moment,
and
the
stone
was
in
my
waistcoat
pocket.
I
was
leaning
against
the
wall
and
looking
at
the
geese
waddling
around
my
feet,
and
suddenly
an
idea
came
to
me
that
would
outsmart
the
best
detective
alive."
"My
sister
had
told
me
weeks
before
that
I
could
choose
one
of
her
geese
for
a
Christmas
gift,
and
I
knew
she
always
kept
her
word.
I
would
take
my
goose
now,
and
hide
the
stone
inside
it
to
take
to
Kilburn.
There
was
a
small
shed
in
the
yard,
and
behind
it,
I
caught
one
of
the
birds—a
big,
white
one
with
a
barred
tail.
I
caught
it,
opened
its
beak,
and
pushed
the
stone
down
its
throat
as
far
as
my
finger
could
reach.
The
bird
swallowed,
and
I
felt
the
stone
move
down
into
its
crop.
But
the
bird
flapped
and
struggled,
and
my
sister
came
out
to
see
what
was
going
on.
As
I
turned
to
speak
to
her,
the
bird
broke
free
and
flew
back
among
the
others."
"'What
were
you
doing
with
that
bird,
Jem?'
she
asked."
